5 Myths About Cellulite

ellulite: 90% of women have it, and most of them don’t want it. Though cellulite is little more than a cosmetic nuisance, and there really isn’t a cure, that doesn’t stop American consumers from forking over $60 million+ plus annually on creams, procedures, and other treatments. In a world where thin is in, and Photoshop will take care of the messy details, it’s understandable that many women are less-than-comfortable with their dimply thighs — and aren’t totally clear on how to diminish their appearance.

1. Myth: Tanning will Get Rid of Cellulite.

Fact: Back away from the tanning bed! There’s a long-held belief that tanned skin will mask the signs of cellulite. And, OK, sure, that’s somewhat true, but, in the long run, it will actually make your cellulite worse. Damaged skin is thinner and weaker — a recipe for disaster in the cellulite department.

2. Myth: Only overweight people get cellulite.

Fact: Even rail-thin models and professional athletes can — and do! — have cellulite, but, thanks to the magic of Photoshop, you’d never see cottage cheese thighs in a glossy magazine.

3. Myth: Topical creams will get rid of cellulite.

Fact: .. At least permanently. Topical creams are not going to cure your cellulite, but creams with retinoids have been shown your skin appear firmer in the short-term.

4. Myth: It doesn’t matter what you do — you’re always going to have cellulite.

Fact: Of course, plenty of the reason women have cellulite has to do with genetics — but don’t let yourself off the hook that much. Eating right, exercising often, getting enough sleep and laying off the smokes will all reduce the appearance of cellulite. Another reason to treat your body well!

5. Myth: Losing weight will get rid of cellulite.

Fact: Losing weight may reduce the appearance of cellulite in some people — but certainly not everyone. For some women, in fact, losing weight makes their cellulite look worse than it did before. There’s no guarantee that weight loss will lead to less cellulite.
