What's trending: butter coffee

The lowdown

Butter coffee, which is also known as Bulletproof coffee or a “fat black”, is made of organic black coffee, medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil and grass-fed butter (from cows that are predominantly grass-fed). It has a smooth and creamy flavour, and doesn’t taste of either butter or oil.

It’s been a big hit with fans of the Paleo diet and “good fat” converts.

The health benefits

MCTs, such as those found in coconut oil, are readily digested to provide a good source of energy. Grass-fed butter is high in fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. It’s also a source of conjugated linoleic acid, which has been linked to improving weight loss and body composition. The fats in butter coffee keep you feeling full for longer and your blood sugars stable; many people say a cup will keep them feeling satisfied until the afternoon.

Drink wisely

Like everything, butter coffee should be consumed in moderation. If you’re trying to cut down on calories or saturated fat consumption, it’s not a drink for you. The recommended intake of saturated fat is less than 10 per cent of your total calorie intake a day (or 24g). One serve of butter coffee (with 1 tbs butter and 1/2 tsp MCT oil) is about 13gsaturated fat. It’s best to enjoy butter coffee if you’re eating a balanced diet that includes lots of fresh fruit, vegetables and protein. Those watching their saturated fat levels may wish to use less butter and coconut oil or limit butter coffee to once a week.

Where to find it

It’s popping up on menus of inner-city cafes, particularly at health-food and Paleo cafes. It’s usually more expensive than regular coffee, costing between $4 and $8 a cup. If you’re feeling brave, make your own at home (see below).

How to make butter coffee

Makes 1 cup

200ml organic black coffee

1 tbs grass-fed butter (available in health-food shops and some supermarkets)

1/2 tbs MCT oil or coconut oil

Brew the organic coffee in a standard espresso machine, French press or filtered coffee machine. Place the coffee, butter and MCT oil in a blender and blend on high for about 30 seconds or until mixed through. Serve and enjoy.

Tip: To ensure your drink stays warm, rinse the blender with boiling water before adding the coffee.
